Primary Target
AMC Theatres Says More Than 20,000 Moviegoers Have Already Booked ‘Barbie’-‘Oppenheimer’ Double Features
Barbenheimer is just the beginning of this year’s summer blockbuster season
‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ Launches With Mighty $235 Million Globally, Including $155 Million Debut at International Box Office
- Barbie and Oppenheimer are both scheduled for release July 21st. And the public has decided that rather than crown one of them the temple winner, they will instead see both as a double feature.
- Hence, Barbenheimer.
- AMC Theaters reports that as of July 10th more than 20,000 AMC Stubs members have purchased tickets to see Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day.
- The Verge notes that loads of other blockbusters will follow, like Haunted Mansion on July 28th, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem on August 2nd, Blue Beetle on August 18th, and more.
- If ticket sales for Barbenheimer do tip the scales, expect think pieces on how to engage memes to save Hollywood.
- But it's worth thinking about whether this is a one time thing or whether it might restart the habit of going to the theater.

Netflix’s AI-assisted green screen bathes actors in eye-searing magenta
Netflix updates ‘Profile Transfer’ feature so users can switch to an existing account
Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing is working. New subscriber count up 236%: report
- Netflix published a paper detailing an improved way to do green screen compositing, that's better able to deal with transparent objects and fine details like hair. This uses an actively lit green background, with actors lit by a magenta screen.
- Netflix also updated its profile transfer features, that lets you take your profile from a shared account to a new account. Now you can take your profile from one shared account to another shared account. For example if you move out of your parents house and you and a roommate want to share a Netflix account. Meanwhile data from Bloomberg Second Measure indicates Netflix new-subscriber count rose 236% from May 21st to June 18th. It's another measurement that indicates the password-sharing crackdown is working.

Bob Iger is sticking around Disney longer than he said he would
Bob Iger Says Linear TV “May Not Be Core” To Disney As Company Explores Strategic Options; Hits SAG-AFTRA And WGA For “Disruptive” Demands In Labor Fight
- In 2022 Bob Iger promised to only stay as Disney CEO for two years. But it is an Iger's prerogative to change his mind. He just signed a contract extending his time as CEO until Dec. 31st, 2026. Iger also said linear TV may not be core to the company, essentially putting ABC, FX and Freeform up for sale, and called union demands unrealistic. And Iger said ESPN will go direct to consumers in the next couple of years but didn't give a timeline. He said the company is looking for a strategic partner for some of its operations, but it doesn't sound like he wants to sell ESPN, just farm out the declining side of the business like traditional cable.

‘Barbie’ to Be Released in Philippines Cinemas, but Map Scene May Be Blurred
- And following up on the Barbie map controversy we talked about last time, the Philippines will allow the movie to be shown there, but the map may need to be blurred according to reports. Dispatches from the front
Hi Brian and/or Tom and/or designated pre-screener,

I did use your 'rogue' code at doghouse systems.  I received a call back from Jo(h)n.  (I didn't catch his last name and I'm not sure of the spelling of his first name, so I'll assume 'John' for the rest of this email.)  He had nothing but good things to say about both Brian and Tom.  Anyways, while I work in the systems administration business, the last thing I want to do is create a system from scratch for my home.  So, I went to their website and configured a kick-ass system for gaming and video reencoding for a future Plex server.  John upgraded my 1TB SSD to a 2TB SSD and added another 1 year to the warranty and when I asked how many drive bays I wanted, he noted that the extra 2 bays (I ordered 2 populated) would have the SATA and power cords preinstalled for expansion.   So, I was pretty happy with how they treated me.

Thanks for the heads up on this because I really didn't want to design my own and have to figure out what parts go with what motherboard etc...  And John was very knowledgeable about all my questions that I had.

I enjoy the show and keep on killing cords (or whatever the new vernacular should be).  I heard about the name change (I'm about 1 month behind on the show) and think that changing it over to a newer format with new segment names makes a lot of sense.  I support whatever decision you are making/have made.

Take care,

- Don

Brian, I will be very curious to hear your opinion on this season of “Barry” if you do wind up watching it. This seems to one of the few shows where my journey mirrors yours, from loving the early seasons to really hating the previous one. I have to depart from Tom here – I thought this season started okay, the middle episodes were terrible (especially the “Tricky Legacies” episode, which might be the most boring hour of TV I’ve ever watched, but Bill Hader allegedly thinks is the funniest episode of the series) – but I do think it wraps up okay with the last 2 episodes. Not as good as it once was, but it at least lands the plane feeling like a similar show to the one I’d watched before last season’s doldrums.

- Tim

Hi guys.

I heard your question on what show to watch or rewatch.

I propose "Sliders" that can be found on Peacock according to Justwatch.

Specifically Season 1 episode 3 in preparation of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

Why?

Basically there are people such as celebrity John Cusack who says we never should have used atomic weapons on Japan to win WW2.

In this episode,we didn't. Because in this alternate universe, the Manhattan Project was a failure instead of our world's success.

Maybe it doesn't hold up. But I thought it was worth a revisit.

- David
