Pluto's co-founder wants to give you a free TV, in exchange for data from the TV and ads on the second special display. That sounds...bad? Bad-ish? Plus, YouTube takes more viewing eye-time and you might be able to pay for the regular old ESPN sometime! Sometime soon? Sometime! All that and more on Cordkillers!

This week on It's Spoilerin' Time: Succession (409), Ted Lasso (310), Silo (104)

When we return on Monday, June 5: Succession (410), Ted Lasso (311-312), Silo (105-106), Miami Vice (407, "Missing Hours")

Primary Target
YouTube’s Viewing on TV Screens Climbed in April as Most Other Streamers Flat or Down: Nielsen
- The numbers for Nielsen's the Gauge which reports total TV viewing by platform are notable this month.
- For the week of March 27 - April 30 viewing of YouTube (excluding YouTube TV) grew 1.5% to make up 8.1% of total time spent watching TV. That makes it the top streaming platform, ahead of Netflix's 6.9%. It was also one of the few that grew its numbers while the rest stayed flat or declined. Tubi and Pluto being the other exceptions. In fact US TV viewing overall dropped 1.9% across streaming cable and broadcast.
- So YouTube is winning?

Front Lines
ESPN Plans to Stream Flagship Channel, Eyeing Cable TV’s Demise
- In what to me is the least shocking story I've seen this year, the Wall Street Journal says sources inside Disney tell it ESPN is preparing to offer a direct-to-consumer version of full ESPN. If you'er unaware, ESPN+ only has games not shown on ESPN on cable. What makes this story rather unsurprising is that the project has no set timeline, its big revelations being that Disney has been making sure to build in flexibility to its deals. So the story here is that ESPN is doing exactly what you'd expect them to do on exactly the timeline that you'd expect them to be on.

YouTube is bringing unskippable 30-second ads to TV
- At its YouTube Brandcast event, YouTube announced it will start running 30-second unskippable ads before top-performing content when watched on a connected TV. These ads will be available in YouTube Select, which targets the top 5% of content on the platform. There's a reason for the new ad format, YouTube claims 70% of YouTube Select impressions come from TVs. YouTube will also start testing ads that show up when you pause video.

A small cable company is going all in on YouTube TV for video
David Zaslav Suggests Rival Streamers Should Bundle Together: If We Don’t Do It Ourselves “It Will Be Done To Us”
- A small US cable and internet company called Wide Open West or WOW is focusing on its broadband package. It's no longer providing cable TV service, migrating its customers to YouTube TV. It also offers bundles with Fubo and DirecTV stream but it will only be marketing the YouTube TV bundle. Separately but somewhat related - Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav suggested at a conference that streamers like his should not consolidate by buying each other, but instead by bundling with each other. He didn't name names, but it sounded like he was suggestion something like getting Paramount+, Max and Peacock all for a combined discount price. He said, "There should be a consolidation, but it is more likely to happen in the repackaging and marketing of products together. That’s what I think makes sense."

Dispatches from the front
Hey Tom and Brian,

Today's NBC's presentation had the constant reminder that everything was on Peacock - from original shows to new and old movies.

Scripted dramas already seem to be fading as the focus for linear as streaming platforms become the new battleground for that category. FOX, in today's presentation, focused heavily on their live sports coverage, unscripted shows, and news.

Brian, Tom, Bryce and possible guest,
There is no way that Disney is going to name a combined streaming service just "Plus."

During last week's episode Brian mentioned that Plus would be a great name, but that there would be an issue because of Apple TV+ as if that was the only issue. During the same conversation you even mentioned Paramount+ in passing, but didn't seem to notice that it is a third streaming service with plus in its name. But that's not even close to the entire list. There is also AMC+, BET+, MGM+ not to mention Discovery+ and the defunct CNN+. There may even be some more streaming services with plus in their name that I'm not thinking of right now. I would think calling a combined streaming service just "Plus" would cause brand confusion.

For good measure here are links to a few articles that talk about so many streaming services having plus in their names.

Streaming Services Are Abusing the + Sign and It Must End - Wired.com
Why Plus Is a Minus When Naming Your Streaming Site - New York Times
Why are so many streaming services named with a 'plus'? - The Media Leader
Why adding ‘Plus’ to the name of every streaming service is actually good - Fast Company

Thank you,

- Bill
