‘The Regime’: HBO Unveils Teaser, New Title For Limited Series Starring Kate Winslet
- Warner Media has changed the name of its HBO Max service to just "Max" with the tagline "The one to watch. Warner CEO David Zaslav says that with the new influx of Discovery content being brought over, it will have the largest TV library in the world. Zaslav repeated his previous talking points that HBO Max was good at acquiring subscribers and Discovery+ good at retaining them, and the new Max should be good at both. He also said that details on sports and news elements of Max will be announced in a few months.
- President of Streaming and Games JB Perette pitched Max as having everything so you won't need multiple services. Sadly Max will not have Star Trek, Star Wars or Bridgerton so your mileage may vary on that assertion. He also talked up a redesigned UI and more stable service. Expect more genre-based hubs ad user-optimized recommendations and a built-in Kids profile. The app color will be blue not purple so you can easily confuse it with Prime and Paramount Plus.
- Max will take over most existing HBO Max app May 23, with some platform's apps getting a notification they need to download a new one. The ad-free tier will stay $16 a month, an ad-supported tier stays $10 a month. Both will support two simultaneous HD streams. A new $20 a month tier has 4 concurrent streams, 4K and Dolby Atmos. Discovery+ will still be available separately for $4.99 month.

Netflix’s Love Is Blind live reunion special was a disaster

‘Love Is Blind’: Vanessa Lachey Addresses Tech Snafu At Top Of Reunion Show
- In March Netflix proved it could pull off a massive live streaming event by delivering a worldwide live stream of Chris Rock's comedy special where he discussed the famous slap. Sunday April 16th Netflix blew all that live streaming credibility.
- A live reunion special for the cast of the reality show Love is Blind was first delayed and then the live stream was canceled. Netflix proceeded to tape the special and post it on demand afterwards.
- The stream started at 8 PM with reportedly a few people able to see it but most father world not. So Netflix posted that they would delay streaming 15 minutes. That stretched to an hour and a half at which point Netflix posted "To everyone who stayed up late, woke up early, gave up their Sunday afternoon… we are incredibly sorry that the Love is Blind Live Reunion did not turn out as we had planned. We're filming it now and we'll have it on Netflix as soon as humanly possible. Again, thank you and sorry." Allegedly some folks were able to see it love and it went up on demand at 12 Pacific Monday for everybody else.
-Reunion will be available for streaming at 12PM PT today. They briefly mention that it's not live and that the cast sat quietly so "you didn't miss a thing." Otherwise, the show looks like a typical film-to-tape reunion special with a studio audience.
- Netflix on Twitter: To everyone who stayed up late, woke up early, gave up their Sunday afternoon… We are incredibly sorry that the Love is Blind Live Reunion did not turn out as we had planned. We're filming it now and we'll have it on Netflix as soon as humanly possible. Again, thank you and…" / Twitter"
- NOTES:
- We still don't know what caused the issues but I asked someone who works in live streaming what "possibly" could have caused the issues.
- There are two likely possibilities
- 1. Connectivity could have failed from the studio where it was being filmed. That could explain why they were able to record it for VOD.
- 2. Or connectivity could have failed at the point they fan it out to regional CDNs to stream into homes. They would have to encode and package it before distributing it and something in that part of the process could have failed to stop replication.
- There is technology called an origin shield that exist between the primary feed out of encoders to the CDN. I’d look there to see if some were getting it some were or there was intermittent behavior.
- Given that reportedly some people could still see the live stream, not feels like explanation 2 is more likely.

Dispatches from the front

Hey gang,

Looks like Brian was right!!  The new Warner Discovery service is called “Max.” That’s all I got. 😂

Take care,

- E

I know in the past I've come down on Brian's takes but he's spot on about what Warner Bros/Discovery is potentially doing to the HBO brand.  WIth the rebrand to MAX I noticed one thing.  For as long as I can recall HBO's logo has had that little circle inside of the ""O"".  If you look at the MAX logo the ""A"" has that little circle inside.  Is this a subtle way to keep MAX associated with HBO?  Whenever I see that ""A"" I instantly think of HBO because of that graphic design choice.  Food for thought.

For brand new movies that are in between theater and streaming runs, I've seen prices between 5.99 up to $20 ( for early releases).

I got mad at myself during the Easter weekend we went to rent a movie and I noticed there was a special for the movie and it was renting at 99 cents but it was late and we didn't want to watch it then and we were going to watch it next day so I waited to rent it and the price had jumped back up to $5.99. This was on prime video.
