Primary Target
Do We Really Need, or Even Want, a Remake of ‘Vertigo’? What’s Next, ‘Citizen Kane 2025’?
Is it time for the unthinkable? A remake of Citizen Kane
- Owen Gleiberman wrote a piece in Variety this week called "Do We Really Need, or Even Want, a Remake of ‘Vertigo’? What’s Next, ‘Citizen Kane 2025’?
- Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to produce and. Star in a remake of Vertigo at Paramount
- "If they can do it to “Vertigo,” they can do it to anything. And that’s a travesty."
- He acknowledges the many remakes of classic movies (including Obsession, a remake of Vertigo in 1976) but thinks this time is different.
- If you want Citizen Kane 2025....are you a monster?

How to Watch
The future of TV is up in the air
- "Janko Roettgers has an article up on the Verge called ""The future of TV is up in the air""
- ATSC 3.0 is the new broadcast TV standard that offers 4K HDR, Dolby Atmos, and interactive features
- ATSC 3.0 is currently available in select markets across the US and Canada,
- It's been 5 years since ATSC 3.0 launched. It's not in all major markets (It's in about 50-75% of households by end of year) and not all TVs support it. Sony is the only one putting it in every TV it makes now. Budget TV makers like Vizio are not supporting it yet.
- Stations must keep ATSC 1.0 going for at least 5 years after adding ATSC 3.0 But even then not in 4K
- EW Scripps bought Nuvyyo in January 2022 to offer an ATSC 3.0-compatible DVR called the Tablo Dual HDMI
- The Tablo Dual HDMI lets you watch and record over-the-air broadcasts, as well as stream from popular apps like Netflix and Hulu
- The Tablo Dual HDMI costs $249.99 and is available now from retailers like Amazon and Best Buy
- ATSC 3.0 could be a game-changer for broadcast TV, offering high-quality video and audio without the need for a cable or satellite subscription. Eighteen percent of TV viewers told market researchers last year that they owned an antenna. CTA expects 8.5 million antenna sales this year.
- However, it remains to be seen how quickly ATSC 3.0 will be adopted by consumers while FAST channels adoption is skyrocketing. Even Scripps is streaming FAST channels and plans to launch a FAST first network this year before bringing it to OTA if it does well."
- Scripps Networks chief distribution officer Jeffrey Wolf “Right now, the best use of our spectrum is building over-the-air broadcast networks. Is that the path of the future? Time will tell.”
- What do we think time will tell him?

What to Watch
Apple reportedly plans to spend $1B a year to release Apple TV+ movies in theaters
- Apple has often released its movies into theaters but usually for small runs. Bloomberg's sources says Apple is working with studios to spend $1 billion for major distribution. Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio; Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” and the spy thriller “Argylle” might get this treatment. Though Scorsese's already has a distribution deal with Paramount. Amazon also plans to spend around $1 billion on wide releases.

Apple’s Friday Night Baseball streams now require a subscription
- Apple however will no longer let you watch Friday Night Baseball without an Apple TV+ subscription. Last season it aired the games for free with ads. This year you have to pay. And there are still ads. Apple shows two live games every Friday. Apple will also add the ability to swap out the audio with that of your local radio commentators.

‘Arrested Development’ Gets A Reprieve And Will Stay On Netflix
- Arrested Development was supposed to leave Netflix March 15th but the departure has been averted. Netflix reached a new deal with Disney's 20th Television to keep the show on Netflix. And Hulu will lose its first three seasons of streaming later this year making Netflix the exclusive home.

Front Lines
FCC chair proposes ban on deceptive “Broadcast TV” and “Regional Sports” fees
- US FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel proposed requiring cable and satellite TV providers to advertise the total cost of services, including broadcast and sports fees. Usually cable TV advertises a base price and the fees are added on the bill. Comcast adds about $40 in fees to its advertised price. The proposed change was given to the other commissioners. No word on when it might get voted on.

Netflix’s ad-supported tier is reportedly gathering momentum in the US
- Bloomberg saw month-old internal Netflix figures indicating around one million accounts have signed up for Netflix's $6.99 a month ad-supported tier. That number does not account for multiple viewers on one account, so is not a count of viewers, only of subscriptions. Most ad-supported subscribers are new to Netflix, not downgrading from more expensive plans.

FuboTV Rebrands as Fubo With Assists From Investor Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Garnett and Mark Sanchez
- Fubo TV has dropped the TV from its name. It's not just Fubo. Co-founder and CEO David Gandler said in a statement “Alongside our continued growth, our consumers have affectionately shortened our name to Fubo and we feel that name represents the premium media brand we are today."

The best streaming devices you can buy in 2023
- Engadget published its recommendations for the best live TV streaming services. It picked YouTube TV as the most well-rounded. The best "cable without a contract" went to DirecTV Stream. Best live sports was given to Fubo. Sling TV got a nod for being customizable and Philo was the budget option.

You Can Now Bundle YouTube TV With Frontier Internet in One Bill
- Frontier Internet is now bundling in YouTube TV. If you're a Frontier Internet subscriber you can add YouTube TV for an extra costs that's $10 less a month than getting it otherwise. And oddly if you're a Frontier TV subscriber you can get YouTubeTV at a $15 a month discount. Frontier had a partnership with YouTube TV before but billed separately. Now the charges all appear on your Frontier bill. YouTubeTV also partners with Verizon.

Dispatches from the front
Hey Killers, for job's sake please keep me anonymous.

I work for a school, and over the years we have moved away from cable companies in every classroom. But curiously, outside of a couple that have discounts for college students there don't seem to be any that have offers for educational institutions. Are you guys (or any listeners) aware of any live tv streaming programs for news and local channels?

Thanks!

Hey Tom, Brian, and Bryce,

...It works with most of the major streaming services (HBO Max, Paramount+, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime TV, Peacock, Disney+, and Apple TV+).

Once you input the TV shows that you want to watch, it will tell you which months to subscribe to each service and tell you how much money you are saving by just subscribing the months you need to. ...

Your Boss,

- Daniel

I feel that Marvel/Disney would totally have gone after the script leaker regardless of whether this was a phase I, II or III movie. I don't think it has anything to do with perceived quality or whether the franchise is waning. This is about setting a precedent. Just like defending a copyright. If you want to protect it you have to actively fight to protect it. If it becomes the norm that these scripts are out in the wild going forward it could diminish the brand.

The secrecy around Infinity War/Endgame was historic and is no comparison to Ant Man 3 in my opinion.

Your boss,

- Russ

Hey all - long time listener, first time boss

I'm wondering if you can answer this, because I'm having trouble finding any information. Last week Bryce, Brian and a mysterious presence that sounded like Tom were discussing how the bankruptcy of Diamond Sports Group might affect MLB - but what about the other leagues broadcast by Bally? Here in Nashville the Bally RSN also does NHL and NBA.

Thanks

- John
