New WGA Contract Explained: AI Is Not a Writer, Solo Scribe Shows Don’t Need Minimum Staff and More
- The Writers Guild of America has accepted a contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television producers and among the terms are rules governing the use of AI tools. If AI tools are used to create material in a script, a WGA writer must still get credit. AI cannot be credited as a source. A studio cannot require a writer to use AI tools. Companies must disclose if any materials given to a writer were generated by AI. And companies may use writer materials to train their own models, but the WGA reserves the right to assert that such training violates the agreement or law. In other words, they can put a stop to the training if they don't like how it's being done. More material to writer pay than the AI guidelines is the fact that streamers must now share streaming data with writers so they know just how well the projects they work on have done. This will inform new increased royalty payments.
- For example: Made-for-streaming titles (so not Suits) that are viewed by 20% or more of domestic subscribers in the first 90 days after release deliver a writer bonus between $9,000 and $16,400 for TV episodes and $40,500 for a film with a budget more than $30 million. There's also an increase of foreign residuals expected to hit about 76%.
‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’, Jimmy Kimmel Live! & ‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’ Set Return
‘The Daily Show’ To Return Mid-October With Guest Hosts; Permanent Host Expected To Start In 2024
- Talk shows are back! Fallon, Colbert, Kimmel and Seth Myers return Monday and John Oliver returned Sunday. The Daily Show will return October 6th with guest hosts (as it was doing pre-strike). A new host is expected next year.
- There were also agreements now with writers' rooms. Unless all episodes are written by the same person, there's a minimum of six writers for a six-episode series up to 9 for runs of more than 13. Two of those written must be employed for at least 20 weeks unless production doesn't last that long. And for pre-green light rooms, you have to be guaranteed 10 consecutive weeks. And at least two of that pre-green light room

Disney+ is getting strict about password sharing, starting in Canada
- Disney began its own password-sharing crackdown in Canada. Starting November 1st, sharing passwords outside your household is an explicit violation of the terms of service in Canada. The subscriber agreement says Disney may “analyze the use of your account” and if it finds you not in compliance, could limit or terminate your account. It also uses the phrase "unless otherwise permitted by your service tier" which indicates Disney might add the ability to pay to add out of household members.

Vizio and TCL have also decided not to support it in their TVs.
Chatter
Gang,
Patreon is being a little baby pants and isn't letting me change to $1.63 per episode. Instead it is setting my amount to a piddly and disgusting $1 no matter what I try. I hate them for this. I've submitted a formal request and expect this to be resolved post haste. Hold fast.

Hi,
What's the real difference between recasting Rick and Morty vs using AI as voice actors?
Why is one considered ok, but the other isn't considered ok? Sorry for the dumb question.
