How to Watch
Why Streaming Prices Will Only Keep Rising This Year
- CNET has an article arguing why streaming prices will continue to rise this coming year. Basically the argument runs that as we've maxed out on services, the "customer acquisition phase" has reached its end. Services have gained as many customers as they're going to with cheap introductory prices that lose money. So it's time to retrench and compete on content while raising prices to make those services profitable. Of course you can also launch ad-supported services that can keep prices low while adding money. Pretty much everybody is doing that too.

Sling TV’s subscriber base continues to tank, loses over 75K subs in Q4
- Dish's cable-replacement service, Sling TV lost 77,000 subscribers last quarter to finish with 2.33 million. Sling recently raised prices by $5. So .... if a la carte services are going up AND cable services are going up AND more live TV and sports is going to the a la carte services..

Netflix to Stream SAG Awards Beginning in 2024
HBO Max subscribers can now live stream US national soccer games
Coachella to Live Stream Free on YouTube Through 2026
- Netflix reached a multi-year partnership with the Screen Actors Guild to live stream the SAG Awards, starting in 2024. HBO Max launched its first US live sporting stream, Tuesday Jan. 17, with the US women's national soccer team against New Zealand. YouTube renewed its agreement to stream the Coachella music festival for free through 2026. Live was one of the last compelling reasons to keep cable or OTA.

- Nintendo shared a bit more footage of The Super Mario Bros. Movie Sunday, with our first chance to hear Seth Rogan's take on Donkey Kong. The movie comes out April 27th.

Rick and Morty will continue but without Justin Roiland
- Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is facing felony charges of domestic violence and Adult Swim has “ended its association with Justin Roiland.” Dan Harmon will become the show's sole show runner and Roiland's voice acting roles, which include Rick and Morty, will be recast.

Front Lines
Eleven Oscar Noms For ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once:’ It All Started With Admiration For A Dead, Flatulating Harry Potter
- We're long past the days when we'd note that a streaming service got an award nomination and now well into the era of who got what nominations. The Oscar nominees were announced last week and Everything Everywhere All At Once, I think it's safe to say a favorite of the Cordkillers crew, got 11 nominations. The most of any entrant. The studio with the most nominations was Disney with 22 (when you count Searchlight Pictures) followed by Netflix with 15 nominations, nine of them for All Quiet on the Western Front and Warner Brothers with 13. Apple got two nominations.

NBCUniversal Projects Peak Losses on Peacock to Hit $3 Billion This Year

Dispatches from the front
REGARDING ANDOR:

Ok, it took me a while to get around to watching it.  But, once I started, it didn't take long to binge through it.

Short-take : It felt like a movie (I'm not even going to say a LONG movie, because I never checked to see ""how much longer is this thing going?!"").  Yes, it was broken up into episodes, but it was paced to make it not ""feel"" chopped up.

The writing was solid.  The pacing was solid.  The characters were solid.  The special effects did NOT feel like ""they were making a video game and thought 'that's good enough for the small screen.  Ship it!'""

Andor was VERY well done and I'm starting to spread the good word.

Thank you for CONTINUING to say this is the best Star Wars in YEARS!  :)

Later!

- Michael

Hey guys,

Interesting interview/show with Bill Oakley on Cordkillers. Never heard of the guy before so it was nice to hear about his recent work and career. It was a little strange that you started off with an interview (I thought I stumbled onto a very special episode of Cordkillers) before moving onto the regular show so it was a little disjointed but it was still very enjoyable.

Thanks,

- Norm
