Primary Target
Top Gun: Maverick': Takeaways From Tom Cruise's Box Office OpeningBox Office: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Scores $86 Million in Massive Second Weekend
- Top Gun: Maverick has topped $291 million in its first two weeks already making it Tom Cruise's highest-grossing film.
- It's a movie that was supposed to come out in 2020 but in part at Cruise's urging, never went straight to streaming, and held off being one of the first films back in theaters.
- Variety's Rebecca Rubin as an article up called "Hollywood, Don’t Take the Wrong Lessons From ‘Top Gun: Maverick’"
- It's a rather simple premise. It's not being a sequel or not that makes a successful movie. It's being good.
- Megan Colligan, the president of Imax Entertainment said, "the team was super protective about making sure the movie was going to be great before [greenlighting it].”
- Cruise also said in press junkets that he didn't want to make a sequel until there was the right story and technology was better.
- Paramount’s president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson put it even simpler “If you have a great story and execute it well, people will come to see it.”
- And while Maverick's appeal was nostalgia, 55% of moviegoers were 35 years or older, more people than expected saw it without having ever seen the original.
How to Watch
SBJ Unpacks: NFL looks at the plus sideThe NFL is looking to launch its own streaming service this summer, says report
- The Sports Business Journal says the NFL is expected to launch a streaming service called NFL Plus in July offering a mobile service previously offered by Yahoo on Verizon. Reportedly the service will be offered for mobile phones and tablets and cost $5 a month. Whatever live games are showing in a local market will be available on the service. It's possible this could get rolled into a deal for NFL: Sunday Ticket which leaves DirecTV at the end of the coming season. Apple and Amazon are considered the frontrunners to get NFL Sunday Ticket.
Boston Red Sox Cable Network Home Becomes First Regional Sports Outlet To Offer Streaming Access Without Pay-TV Subscription
- So the NFL is taking some small control of its own content there which is interesting. Even more interesting is the first regional sports network to go direct to consumers. Up until now regional sports networks, the ones that show the majority of a team's games in the local market, have only been available on cable or a cable-like streaming package like YouTube TV. And even then not all of them are on the streaming services. NESN, the home of the Boston Red Sox baseball team and Boston Bruins hockey team is going straight to viewers over the internet in New England. For $30 a month. And this is the first of a trend. Sinclair, which operates the Bally Sports Nets, and NBCUniversal which operates several regional sports nets as well, are both planning direct to consumer offerings as well.- And even if you don't like sports, this is good news. It's a sign that the money is moving to streaming, and while there is a lot of work to be done on how this is all going to end up working, when the sports arrives, the attention gets focused.

Dispatches from the Front
Does the Disney cable channel have advertising? I never had it as a kid so I'm not sure if they (and long-time Disney subscribers) might already have some experience with ads on Disney. That would certainly make it easier to swallow. Either way, I don't think it is a big deal for Disney. It potentially opens up the channel to more subscribers who might not otherwise afford it."
