Fox Punts on Setting 2022 Fall Schedule as ‘9-1-1,’ ‘The Resident’ Remain in LimboUPFRONTS 2022: The Full List of New Broadcast Series Orders
- The network upfront is happening where TV networks make announcements of their upcoming shows and try to get advertisers interested in committing to buying ads.
- Some waves were made in the industry when Fox did not announce its fall schedule at its upfront, something that once would have been unthinkable.
- Which made me wonder:
- What role does broadcast television play these days?- Sunday Peacock streamed the BBMAs and earlier this year streamed the winter olympics, neither of which required a cable subscription. Streaming services are increasingly taking on live broadcasts like awards shows and sports, local news is showing up there too as well as in apps for the stations themselves--- so....

Netflix Exploring Live Streaming For First Time; Plans To Roll Out For Unscripted Series & Stand-Up Specials
- We've talked about Netflix changing its mind about having an ad-supported version of its service - and according to a note to workers, it might come before the end of the year.
- But Deadline's sources say Netflix is also considering changing its mind about another thing-- live streaming.
- But not for sports or news.
- Instead a small team is in the preliminary stages of developing a feature to live stream unscripted shows and stand-up comedy. This could allow for live voting on programs like The Circle or live reunion shows after a finale is released. For comedy Netflix's live festivals could potentially be live streamed.
- Diseny+ live streamed the Academy Award nominations earlier this year and plans to stream Dancing with Stars live as well.

What to Watch
‘Black Mirror’ Returns: New Series in the Works at Netflix
- Variety's sources say Netflix has approved a sixth season of Black Mirror. Casting has supposedly begin and there will be more than three episodes and they will be more cinematic. One reason for the long delay between seasons was that the producer, Annabel Jones and Charlie Brooker left the production company that owned the rights to Black Mirror, and Netflix had to strike a deal.

David Tennant And Catherine Tate To Return To ‘Doctor Who’
- The BBC announced that Ncuti Gatwa of "Sex Education:" was taking over as the 14th Doctor int he next season which will be helmed by Russell T. Davies, returning to the show after he relaunched it with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. And now Davies says Tennant and Catherine Tate will return to the series as well. No details of who they will be used in the story were given but the show will celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The trailer for James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water  was released to the public. It comes to theaters December 16th.
We also got a trailer for season 4 of HBO's Westworld. The 8-episode season launches June 26th.
‘The Boys’ Are Back In Action-Packed, Bloody Season 3 Trailer
- The Boys has a new trailer out for season 3. We're getting a new character called Soldier Boy and the return of CEO Stan Edgar played by Giancarlo Esposito. The first three episodes return to Prime Video June 3rd.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ Played More Than 60 Times in a Single NYC Theater on Thursday. Is That a Problem?
- The premiere of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness premiered at the AMC Theaters in Times Square New York with more than 60 screenings in 12 hours meaning you were never more than a few minutes from a showing. Is that too much?

Disney CEO Bob Chapek also started hinting at a standalone ESPN package that had all of ESPN, not just EPSN+, which is content not available on ESPN's cable channels. He didn't tell investors anything we didn't already know, that ESPN could create a streaming service that appeals to superfans of sports--It's just the fact that he said it out loud. Bob Iger said it back in 2015 but said then it's more than 5 years away. Well, it's been 7. Chapek also said he feels bullish about adjusting the price of Disney + and we don't think he meant down.

Dispatches from the Front

Tom, Brian, Bryce and possible guest,
Why are there commercial breaks in streaming shows such as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?
One of the commercial breaks in this last week's episode was ridiculously blatant. It ended with a close up of Captain Pike and then went to black only to come back a few seconds later to the exact same close up of Captain Pike.

Thank you,

- Bill

Hi Team - I remember the Netflix comment that they wanted to become HBO before HBO became Netflix. But I feel they completely forgot what HBO was about over the last few years when they spent billions of dollars on content. That HBO was known for its high quality stuff and not quantity. I have no problem paying for good content and based on HBO Max's success recently, neither does the market. All I am trying to say is if Netflix can focus on higher quality content rather than trying to cover a large base of users I am sure they will be able to get back on track. And the most significant advantage they have is that they can work with a global pool of creators that the others can't right now as no one is in as many countries as Netflix is.

Thanks,

- Josh
