Primary Target
Apple Will Let Content Apps Like Netflix, Spotify Link to Their Websites to Sign Up Users
Apple now allows Netflix, Spotify and other 'reader' apps to link to their sites for payment
Update on “reader” app distribution
- Apple  now allows developers of so-called "reader" apps -- like Netflix and Spotify for example- to link to a website for account creation and management.  Apple defines reader apps as applications that provide access to "previously purchased content or content subscriptions for digital magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music and video." This is an extension of its settlement with the Japanese Fair Trade Commission but will apply worldwide.
- Developers must request access to the "External Link Account Entitlement" program. They may not list prices. The suggested text for the link is “Go to example.com to create or manage your account.”

How to Watch
VIZIO Introduces Jump Ads to Connect Linear TV With Streaming
Vizio showing ads over live TV is a glimpse of our hellish future
- Vizio announced a feature called "jump ads." The press release explains it is meant to "designed to bridge the gap between linear TV and streaming services."
- Basically what it does is at the end of a program on "linear TV" -- for most people that means cable-- a partner network can push an overlay through the internet that can link out to the network's app.
- FOX is the first to test it. At the end of the premier episode of its new comedy Welcome to Flatch" an overlay will come up that says you can watch the first seven episodes of te season on the FOX NOW app. This looks like any other network banner but you can select it with the Vizio remote and launch the app.
- Vizio calls its software for this, Inscape ACR. It can recognize when a program is on air and serve the banner in real time.
- The Next Web's Callum Booth believes this is pretty bad, writing "It won’t be long until more manufacturers adopt Vizio’s approach — and soon after that we’ll start seeing unrelated adverts appearing on live television or over streaming apps.
- This is all part of a technological shift where we don’t fully own or control our products. "

Dispatches from the Front
Hi, Tom, Brian, Bryce, and Guest,

I haven't heard you discuss this, so I thought I'd pass it along. I received an email last week from Peacock about a test for a new benefit for Premium and Premium Plus subscribers. Those who opt in will receive either $15 towards a Fandango movie ticket and convenience fee or a $7 Vudu movie rental per month at no additional cost.

The link in the email sent me to www.peacocktvbenefits.com to enroll. The email links are apparently personalized, as once I clicked on the "Get Started" button, the site said I was all set. Trying to reach the site without going through the email link sent me to a parking page.

This looks like a nice value-add for Peacock. The terms page didn't say anything about keeping this quiet (though Peacock's general terms do include a chili recipe inspired by The Office), so I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Your Boss,
- Mike
