How to Watch
Comcast’s NBCUniversal Near Deal to Shift Content to Peacock From Hulu
Netflix’s Marvel TV shows will disappear at the end of this month
- I've tried to tell y'all over the past few years that the great explosion of choice some of you complained about would not last forever.
- I've also said that shows moving around from service to service was mostly a phenomenon of legacy deals needing to unwind.
- As the number of services shows signs of beginning to consolidate, the services that want to survive are pulling in their own content off other platforms. We're in the endgame now folks.
- Two stories are emblematic of this new stage.
- One, Hulu has had NBC shows the next day since back before it was owned by Disney. With Peacock a lot of folks thought those shows would just move to Peacock but there were contracts and stuff preventing that.
- Remember that NBC's owner, Comcast, still owns a small part of Hulu. Disney has wrested control of Hulu and they'd like that last small bit too.
- The Wall Street Journal's sources say NBC is finalizing a plan to change the Hulu partnership and make next-day streaming of flagship shows like The Voice and Saturday Night Live exclusive to Peacock. Apparently NBC had until Friday to make the move otherwise the existing deal continues until 2024.
- And in another shoe we've been waiting to drop, the Marvel shows made for Netflix, Daredevil, Jessica jones, etc.. will be disappearing from Netflix on February 28th. No word on where they will show up next, but Disney+ is the obvious bet.
- So NBC is pushing to get content back early from Hulu and Marvel evaporating from Netflix. Are we headed for a world where IP always appears on its own service? - Is it a world we want?

Dispatches from the Front
Hi Folks - Thought I would pitch in with my $.02 on the whole Binge Vs Weekly debate that discussed in the last episode. While I don’t have a set rule I have usually binged Comedy shows (Seinfeld and Modern Family in about 3 months each) but preferred a slightly slower approach to some more complicated shows with lots of Story lines like Witcher or GoT to be able to absorb the week’s stories and listen to the podcasts etc. But last night when I started Narcos: Mexico Season 3 I was totally lost as to who was who and then figured out this was one of those series that given the number of characters is better as a binge as you will not be able to remember all of them. (That is why I plan on bingeing The Expanse now that all it’s seasons are done. TL;DR I guess it is dependent on the show and your preferences as you can see even I contradicted myself before the email ended. But I definitely do not agree that every show is better in a Binge.

Thanks,

- Josh

Gentlemen and guests, I bought an LG 4K tv last year which is a smart tv to replace my aging non-smart tv. I find it more convenient to use the TV apps than it is to use a streaming stick. The problem is, not all apps are available on my tv. If I want to watch hockey on ESPN plus I have to use a stick( I have Roku, FireTv and Chromecast). It seems that the apps on the tv as well as LG’s OS are updated frequently,
thanks

- Steve

Just wanted to share my use case that I have an external dongle for two reasons. I bought a Tivo stream 4K that is plugged in to my very high-end LG OLED television. And the reason I have it and don't exclusively use the TV OS is because:

1) After several years I still do not have HBO Max on my LG tv. This is very frustrating, and I have no recourse but to use some other method to watch this particular streaming service.
2) The Tivo Stream 4k actually does a really good job of letting me keep track of all the shows I watch in one place. I add all of the shows I watch on almost every streaming service into one page called "My Shows" so when I navigate to this page I can remember all of the things that I am watching or want to watch regardless of service, and when I click on that show or movie it takes me right to that streaming service to watch it. This is very helpful because I very often forget all of the things I'm watching and all the different places they live, and this is a great way to aggregate that and remind me that for example "oh yeah I still have more Righteous Gemstones to watch" or "oh yeah I still haven’t watched Red Notice" Once I am done watching a show or movie I just remove it from that page and whenever I want to add something to my watch list I just add it to that page.

So until there is a smart TV that can guarantee I will have all of the streaming apps that I want (good luck to us all on that) AND help me aggregate all my shows and movies into one nice watch list, I will continue to use an external device.

Hey gang!

I was listening to the last episode and someone writing in talked about how they were going to listen to spoilerin time without having watched the rest of The Book of Boba Fett and I thought I’d add something. I almost never watch a show concurrent with you guys week over week. My wife HATES waiting week over week for a show but also is very out of the loop when it comes to new shows. What I do is I listen to all the spoiler on time episodes for new shows all the way until the end of the season and then determine whether or not it’ll be something my wife would like to watch along with me. Once the season (and your commentary) is over, I walk in and say “Honey! I’ve got this great new show I KNOW you will love!” I like listening to the commentary and I’ve never thought that this has detracted from the experience of watching the shows at all. I did this with Raised by Wolves, What we do in the Shadows (both seasons), The Righteous Gemstones Season 1, Squid Game (decided not to watch it), The Good Place, and many many more. I’ve literally been using spoilers in time as a tv guide for years and you guys are a great litmus test to see if my wife will like a show. She knows I do it and it’s been a proven system since before we were married. Even if I never intend on watching a show I still find the conversation enjoyable.

Keep it up,

- Ander
