Can’t Hear What Actors Are Saying on TV? It’s Not You, Probably
Survey: Why America is obsessed with subtitles
- The Wall Street Journal's Cordelia James has an article called "Can’t Hear What Actors Are Saying on TV? It’s Not You, Probably"
- According to a survey commissioned by language-teaching app Preply, 50% of Americans watch content with subtitles most of the time, and 55%, say it is harder to hear the dialogue in shows and movies than it used to be.
- While some of the problem might be your TV speakers pointing away from you in flat panel televisions, a lot of it is in the post-production process for the stuff you're watching.
- That's because the sound mixers may not be optimizing it for mono or stereo home speakers. They're likely optimizing for surround sound, especially when a movie is being made specifically to be seen in theaters with more sophisticated sound systems. And it may be a style choice to show how explosive a scene is by making the explosion drown out dialogue on purpose. Something Christopher Nolan has proudly embraced in movies like Tenet.
- The WSJ article suggests a few things you can do at home to help. A TV being placed on a surface instead of on a wall will help sound from downward-facing TV speakers bounce off surfaces toward you better. If you buy a sound bar get one with a center channel meant for dialogue. Check your settings to see if there are sound settings that can boost dialogue. You can also pair earbuds so you can hear the sound better. Apple TV lets you pair two pairs of earbuds at once. And Google and Apple let you use a phone as a speaker which you can then pair with earbuds.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Sequel on Ice, Potential ‘Man of Steel 2’ in Jeopardy as Warner Bros. Considers Major DC Reboot
James Gunn Says Superman Is a ‘Huge Priority’ for the New DC Universe: ‘If Not the Biggest Priority’
- With new heads James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios, it's not surprising to hear that the lineup is getting shuffled. Word is that the next Wonder Woman movie didn't mesh with the new strategy and will not be made.Meanwhile Gal Gadot tweeted about how excited she is to share the next chapter of Wonder Woman with folks. So something is happening with the character, just not that third movie. New Man of Steel and Black Adam movies are also in question though when asked on Twitter if we are going to see a Superman movie, Gunn said "Yes of course, Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.” Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom comes out in December 2023. Could that be the last movie in the Snyderverse?
‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Kit Harington Teases Jon Snow Spinoff Series: “He’s Not OK”
- At the Game of Thrones convention in LA, Kit Harrington talked a little about the Jon Snow spinoff show announced earlier this year. Harrington didn't give any details about the plot but said that he thought Jon Snow probably felt he got off lightly at the end of Game of Thrones after killing a lot of people. "He’s gotta ...live out his life thinking about ...all of this trauma, and that, that’s interesting.” George RR Martin wrote earlier this year that it Harrington pitched the show and recommended the show runners. The working title is SNOW.
'Parasite' Director's New Movie Trailer Finds Robert Pattinson in a Tube
- Bong Joon-ho is best known for directing Parasite, but before that he was probably best known for Snowpiercer. He's returning to a more SciFi realm with his next movie, Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson and Steve Yuen. The movie is based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. Warner released a 30-second teaser for the film showing Pattinson in a tube. Mickey 17 is coming to theaters March 29, 2024.

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos On Advertising Rollout, Password Sharing, And Why The Company Is Punting On Sports Rights: “We’re Not Anti-Sports, We’re Just Pro-Profit”
- At the UBS Global Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the company has looked at sports but it doesn't see a "profit path" calling sports a “loss leader.” He pointed out that Netflix got 165 million households to watch Squid Game without having to premiere it after the Super Bowl. In his words, "We didn’t need a big loss leader to build a mass audience.” And another quotable quote from Sarandos. “We’re not anti-sports. We’re just pro-profit. On Netflix's plan to combat password sharing he said that it's "a lot like the way you manage a price increase. … Consumers aren’t going to love it right out of the gate, but we need to show them why they should see value.” And “We created a product that was not very easy for you to add your kids to and pay for that.” And finally, he indicated that there will likely be multiple tiers of ad-supported Netflix at different price points in the future.

Dispatches from the Front
Cord Killers team,
Based on your conversation in show 434, about possible changes to movies or TV shows because of early feedback or beta groups, it got me wondering if we are now at point where we can create a check box page before you watch content where you can check off the things you do not want to see or have changed. For example, no swear words, no gay kissing, no sex scenes, less blood, no guns, and so on. Users would click on the items they want to change and the server would load a version of the content that matches the boxes they checked.
Sadly, I believe if this becomes an option, we will be extending the echo chamber issue from the social media world to the streaming content world.
Your thoughts?
Keep up the great work!
Cheers,
- Kev
Howdy,
I am watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and am enjoying it. I am on episode 3.
I have noticed that with all new series, I have been enjoying the first seasons and then quickly loosing interest in subsequent seasons. Does anyone else have this issue? I think I enjoy watching the characters and worlds being revealed, but once they get down to the everyday goings on and there are fewer new things to discover, I lose interest.
Thank you for all that you do.
Sincerely,
- John
