Primary Target
Is it bad that everything is called Plus?
Lionsgate Leaning Toward Studio Spinoff, Not Starz Divestiture
Lionsgate to spin off studio biz, announces new ‘Lionsgate+’ brand for international streaming
Epix To Rebrand As MGM+ With ‘Hotel Cocaine’ & ‘Belgravia’ Follow-Up
- Lionsgate said in an SEC filing that instead of selling off Starz, as it indicated in May it was planning to do, it may sell off its studio business.
- Lionsgate made another move to rebrand its International streaming service from Starzplay to Lionsgate+ in 35 countries. It will stay with Starz in the Middle East, North Africa, US and Canada and Lionsgate Play in South and Southeast Asia.
- CEO Jeffrey Hirsch said the change “brings a distinct and differentiated identity in an increasingly crowded international marketplace and builds on the brand equity in the Lionsgate name that our extensive research has proven is strong around the world.”
- Meanwhile, Amazon-owned MGM will change the name of the Epix channel and streaming service to MGM+
- So Lionsgate+ and MGM+ join Disney+, Discovery+, AppleTV+, Paramount+, ESPN+ and BET+ among some others.
- While it's interesting to hear that Lionsgate plans to stick with streaming over studios. I thought we might talk about this whole Plus trend. I see lots of wise-crackers out there making fun of the fact that everything is called plus. I suppose it can provide a momentary feeling of superiority to do so. But is it really a bad thing?

Bruce Willis denies selling rights to his face
- Last week, several outlets reported that actor Bruce Willis had licensed his digital rights to a company called Deepcake to make ads, movies and TV shows that star digital versions of Willis. Deepcake trained an algorithm on Willis's performances in 1990s movies like Die Hard and Fifth Element. The algorithm can map Willis's head onto another actor's body. The actor himself suffers from aphasia and has stepped away form acting. The company based in Tbilisi, Georgia has already used Willis's likeness in an ad in Russia. Then this weekend, a spokesperson for the actor told the BBC that Willias had "no partnership or agreement" with the company. Amazon says YES to putting the Yankees on cable
- As New York Yankee Aaron Judge pursues the AL Home Run record there has been controversy about watching the games. Most Yankees games are on the YES network, a cable channel you need a cable or cable-like service to watch. Friday September 23 it was exclusively on Apple TV. While Apple makes it's baseball games available for free available on the web, and on its apps, many people complained. So when facing the same issue on Friday September 30, Amazon Prime Video agreed to let YES network simulcast the broadcast so cable subscribers wouldn't have to get Amazon Prime to watch. It doesn't hurt that Amazon owns 15% of YES.

Dispatches from the Front
If we had a fourteen year copyright,  in about two years I could launch a show called “Frame Rate”  It would be a show that would help you watch what you want, when you want, where you want, and how you want it.

I would hope the three of you would become my boss.   It’s gratifying and I suggest it to anyone listening who isn’t a boss, become one.

Your Boss
