Peacock Topped 15 Million Paid Subscribers in Q3, NBCU’s CEO Says, Touting Movie Strategy and End of Hulu Deal for Next-Day Episodes
- NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said Peacock added more than 2 million paid subscribers in Q3 to reach 15 million total. When you count free viewers, the number rises to 30 million, up three million over last quarter. Shell attributed the increase to getting exclusive rights to lots of NBC shows that were previously available on Hulu as well as sports like baseball, NFL and Premier League soccer. Shell repeated comments made by his boss, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, that NBC would love to own Hulu, though he knows Disney is not interested in selling.|
- That's great for them. It means that some people valued the stuff that moved off Hulu enough to move to Peacock. But I know what lots of you are still thinking. How do I keep up on all of this? I can't afford it all.

Slingbox, a Pioneering Streaming Device, Will Become Permanently Unusable in November
- Gather 'round children. You may not know this, but Slingbox was once a controversial hardware device that let you stream your home TV to yourself over the internet. Streaming has made it unnecessary and few people still use it. But Dish has kept the servers running. Until now. Starting November 9, 2022, existing sling boxes will stop working with sling box service.
James Cameron Using a ‘Simple Hack’ to Achieve High Frame Rate on ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’
- James Cameron wanted to do variable frame rates for Avatar: The Way of the Water. He wanted the film to show at 48 fps when there was cool 3D that would benefit from the higher frame rate, but then ratchet down tot he more familiar 24 fps when he wanted it to look filmic. But theaters can only show in one frame rate at a time. Cameron could have started a campaign to upgrade projector software to handle a variable frame rate codec...Or he could do what he did: Encode the whole thing at 48 fps. When he wants to show scenes in 24p, he just doubles the frames. Basically you get every frame twice, but the human eye just sees 24 frames per second.

Dispatches from the front
Regarding Amazon‘s four new products you talked about on the last show. Bryan is right that I no longer need an MP3 player and camera and pager and GPS and phones now that Apple made the iPhones. So why does Apple make an iPhone 14 pro max and iPhone 14 pro and iPhone 14 mini and iPhone SE and iPad and Apple TV and Apple Watch? Can’t Apple put this all in one device?
- James
