Sony Moves Up Release Date for ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Up 2 Week to October 1st I
- Anybody who says they absolutely knows what's going to happen with theater windows and day and date releases is at the very least stretching the truth.
- It does seem that big-name pictures are settling around a 45-day exclusive. It does not seem that all day and date releases are off the table. And it doesn't seem like the studios have agreed if or when theaters are "back."
- Here's the evidence from the past couple of weeks.
- Halloween Kills, the second in the revival fo the franchise that will also star Jamie Lee Curtis will but on Peacock the same day it debuts in theaters, October 15th. NBCUniversal also did this with The Boss Baby; Family Business.
- Of course you all probably remember that all Warner titles for the rest fo the year, including Dune and the Matrix will but on HBO Max the same day as theaters.
- However Disney is saying that all its remaining 2021 movies will be released in theaters first, -- including The Eternals on November 5th and West Side Story on December 10th. All of them will have 45 day windows except Encanto which will have a 30-day window. This comes after Shang-chi set the record for a Labor Day movie premiere with $75.5 million domestic, and held on to receipts in its second week.
- Not every studio is feeling confident though. Paramount pushed Top Gun: Maverick AGAIN from November 19th to May 27th. And Mission Impossible 7 moves out of May to September 30, 2022. And Jackass Forever, which has been running trailers before movies like Shang-chi is pushed from October 22nd to February 4th.
- New Line pushed Mad Max: Furiosa from June 23, 2023, to May 24, 2024. Though that has more to do with a shooting schedule than anticipated box office attendance as production begins next year.
- Not everybody is delaying though. Bob's Burgers movie finally et a date after being in limbo for most fo COVID, set to premiere May 27, 2022.
- The departure of Top Gun led Sony to push Ghostbusters: Afterlife from Nov. 11 to November 19th so its not on the long weekend in the US.
- And Sony also moved Venom: Let There be Carnage EARLIER from October 15th to October 1st.
- Studios are going day and date again while other studios are sweraing to theater exclusives, theaters are pushing movies off again while others are moving them up!What the heck is happening Brian?

Locast’s free TV service shuts down after losing copyright ruling
- Locast is a non-profit service that streams locally broadcast channels over the internet, to people geolocated in the broadcast area in order to provide those without good signal reception a way to get local broadcasts.
- Major broadcast networks in the US get paid by cable and streaming companies to carry local channels. ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC jointly sued Locast in July 2019 for retransmitting their programming without a license.
- Locast has justified its operation under a 1976 law that grants nonprofits the right to retransmit within the broadcast area if they receive no "commercial advantage" and do not charge users anything more than what's "necessary to defray the actual and reasonable costs of maintaining and operating the secondary transmission service." The law was meant to help improve accessibility for people who lived in areas with poor reception, like apartment buildings or mountain valleys.
- US District Judge Louis Stanton granted the networks motion to dismiss Locast's defense on Wednesday. The judge ruled that Locast has been using donations from viewers to expand into new markets, not strictly for local operation.
- Just Stanton also denied Locast's motion seeking summary judgement that it qualified for the exemption.
- At first Locast responded by removing the interruptions asking for donations. Then Thursday morning it announced it would suspend operations immediately. Locast could still appeal the case.
- Locast says it has more than 3 million users. It offers the service for free with interruptions every 15 minutes asking for donations. A $5 a month donation gets rid of the interruptions and users can plead financial difficulties to have the interruptions removed for free.
- Some companies, including AT&T, donate to Locast and integrate the service into their own, though $4.37 million of Locast's $4.52 million in revenue in 2020 came directly from users

Dispatches from the Front
Hello all,
I’ve been a subscriber for many years now, and Hulu has always (and continues to be to me) a place for me to catch up on network shows. I pay for the ad-free tier, as well. Disney+ Suckered me in pre-launch with a $150, 3-year, pre-pay special… so those two services live separately in my mind. As soon as Hulu loses the ability to give me the large library of content (read: all network shows, a day later, without ads) it will go from being a “must-have” to an “activate when Handmaid’s Tale” comes out.
From a (minor) boss… more senior co-worker,
- Mike
I went back to the theater for the first time since the pandemic started and it was glorious. Black Widow was not among my favorite MCU movies, but it was among my more memorable movie-going experiences. The theater (part of the Bow Tie Cinema chain) had their regular concession stand and premium bar open for business as usual; no app-based nonsense. I went to a weekday matinee (thank you flexible remote working) and there was only one other person, so I felt safe enjoying my popcorn. I wish there were more movies.
Regards,
- Chris
Hello Cord Killers,
I wanted to share my concession experience. A local independent theater, with the best popcorn, eliminated refills on larges, otherwise, no service disruption. At the Marcus chain location we have a 2020 popcorn bucket. We can get 'refills' for $5. Where it used to be a fill up of the bucket between a medium and a large, it is now a bag. We are handed a large clear garbage bag filled with popcorn. Think bigger than a bathroom trash can and smaller than kitchen trash. Even better, they can agitate the popcorn after adding butter several times making it more delicious. Otherwise pickup of food and ordering is just like before. At the chain I think you can order, but why go through the trouble? We also no longer need to print tickets, just showing the confirmation screen on my phone with no barcode is fine.
- Sean
Hey all,
I know Tom mentioned you might not be coming back to What If but I saw last week's episode (103) and when it ended, I IMMEDIATELY thought of Brian's assessment about some of the What If Comics: "the story was, yeah, everyone got murdered..sometimes it goes that way." I can only imagine how he felt with episode 104’s ending. Maybe you can get a few seconds of Brian saying "nah nah nah nah, I told you so" before doing your other recaps? Regardless, good day sirs!
- Norm
P.S. I finally got around to World’s Greatest Con and loved it. I know all about Operation Mincemeat and from the intro I thought this would be a rehash of stuff I already knew. And it was but the way you delivered the material and added your own personal pieces really elevated. I’ve let the history nerds know about it and look forward to another go round for season 2!
