Primary Target
YouTube TV removed from Roku channel store amid Google contract dispute
- The YouTube TV app is no longer available for download from the Roku channel store. Roku and Google could not reach an agreement on terms. Existing YouTube TV customers can still use the app, just not new customers. Platforms like Roku often make special agreements with larger app-makers on things like ad revenue sharing, app placement and promotion. Roku said YouTube wanted access to customer data it was not willing to share, wanted Roku to agree to hardware requirements for the YouTube TV app to work, and limit search results to just YouTube results when the YouTube app is open. Roku itself wants to lower the priority of a dedicated search result row for YouTube that shows up in Roku's general search. Roku says it has not asked for more money, it just doesn't want to agree to the other terms. Google said "To be clear, we have never, as they have alleged, made any requests to access user data or interfere with search results. This claim is baseless and false."

As streaming surges globally, Roku is falling behind abroad
- Roku might be the leader in streaming devices in the US, but is falling behind in other markets, according to a new report from streaming media intelligence company Conviva, which shows Roku losing out to smart TV makers like Samsung and LG, particularly in South America. The report also shows that viewing has shifted from mobile to the big screen, from prime time to anytime and from live to on demand.

How to Watch
HBO Max’s cheaper ad-supported tier will reportedly cost $9.99 per month
HBO Max is getting live hockey, thanks to a new NHL deal
HBO Max Year One: WarnerMedia Direct-To-Consumer Chief Andy Forssell On Streaming Mojo At Last, Warner Bros Day-And-Date Takeaways, AVOD Plan & More
- CNBC reports HBO Max will launch it's ad-supported tier in June at a $5 a month discount, so $9.99 a month instead of $14.99.
- The cheaper tier will not include day and date movie releases, but those are going away at the end of this year anyway.
- Ad-supported members will get HBO shows and this won't be interrupted with ads.
- And it looks like HBO Max is also going to get live hockey from the NHL. ABC and Warner Media are splitting up hockey rights after winning them away from NBC. Warner, and therefore TNT and TBS and presumably HBO Max will get the Stanley Cup in 2023, 2025 and 2027, half of the playoffs, including the conference finals and the NHL Winter Classic every year.
- The rest will be on ABC/ESPN, some of which may end up on ESPN Plus.
- And no sports are coming to HBO Max in 2021. AT&T's Andy Forssell made that clear in an interview with Deadline "It would be crazy if hockey didn’t end up on HBO Max," but alsoY"ou’ll probably see us experiment with live sports in other regions before the US."

Dispatches from the Front
I say nay. Oscars should be films in theaters like it has been for 100 years. There used to be something called the Cable Ace awards because the Emmy awards were too snooty for cable. We need something like that for movies that come out in streaming or now I guess video games. Streamy Ace awards maybe. Or just make the Emmy awards catch all the streaming stuff because it's already television, which streaming pretty much is now. Netflix and HBO exclusive movies shouldn't be getting Oscars. They oughta be in the Emmy awards.

- Weir

Hello Gang,

To explain my opinion about the Oscar's I should explain that I'm very picky about the recommendations I listen to. I have one friend that whenever they recommend something, I watch it that week, and another friend that I know whatever they recommend is not going to be something I like.

The Oscars on their own have never been a good source for me. In fact I've found that watching and listening to podcasts on the Oscar's by people I trust to be a much more valuable use of time.

I will specifically chime into your show as well as a few other excited to hear your opinions of the awards but the awards themselves have become too self congratulatory.

- Ander

P.S. one of you makes really good recommendations that always work for my wife and I. But I'm not saying who because I love you all.

I think the dip in ratings was because so few people went to theaters to watch movies. IF theaters open up in full in 2021 and people can get enthusiastic about movies again, I figure the ratings for the Oscars will return to a more "normal" level.

Later!

- Michael
