Master of None Season 3

Primary Target
Netflix hauls in 7 Oscars, and Facebook wins its first (really)
Oscars 2021 results: The full list of winners, from Nomadland to Daniel Kaluuya
Colette' Oscar win is a first for the video game industry
Netflix beats all studios with seven Oscars
Oscars Ratings Crash To All-Time Low; Viewership Falls Under 10M For First Time Ever
And the winner is…who cares?
- Netflix took home seven Academy Awards on Sunday for Mank and Trial fo the Chicago Seven. Disney Plus got two for Soul and Amazon won two for Sound of Metal. Even Facebook got in on the action with Oculus VR getting an award for its short film, Colette, made as part of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. Note that you don't need VR to watch the film.
- It was Netflix's best Oscar haul yet and in a year with few theatrical runs, not that surprising that streaming companies did well. Soul would likely not have been a Disney Plus film in a non-pandemic year.
- We've talked about how this show and Frame Rate before it, have gone from speculating on streaming shows getting awards, to covering the first time it happens, to the first time multiple streamers got them to how it's become a normal thing.
- But as that has happened, interest in the live broadcast of the Oscars, and other awards shows, has diminished, as it competes with all the other options for entertainment. This year's broadcast was watched by 9.85 million, with a rating of 1.9 among the 18-49 demographic. That is an all-time low for Hollywood’s biggest night. Down 58% over last year.
- The Oscars is certainly still important to millions of movie fans but it's not as massively important as it used to be. In the 1980s it was criticized for being too mainstream. Now it's seen as a stamp of what the "quality" lesser-known movies are.
- Is that what it's good for? A list of critically-acclaimed movies? Does anyone-- should anyone-- care about the Oscars?

Apple sued for terminating account with $25,000 worth of apps and videos
- Apple is facing two class action suits over its sale and rental of TV shows and movies.
- In one suit, David Andino argues on behalf of the class that the term "buy" in the App Store is deceptive because Apple can terminate a person's Apple ID which terminates access to purchased content. US District Court Judge John Mendez denied a motion to dismiss the suit.
- In another class action suit, Matthew Price claims on behalf of the class, that Apple causes financial damage when it terminates an account.price says he lost $24,590.05 worth of iTunes, App Store and in-app purchases when his account was terminated.
- Apple's videos and apps are all able to be downloaded and stored through Apple does encourage using cloud storage, including offering settings that will automatically remove files that are not frequently accessed.
- Apple also does not let you download 4K copies of content, those can only be streamed, though it also does not charge extra for offering 4k versions.

Disney's new deal with Sony gets Spider-Man flicks on Disney+
- We told you that Netflix closed a deal to get Sony's films, including Spider-man, in the window immediately after the theater exclusive ends. Well Disney Plus has snapped up the window after that which is usually where a movie shows on TV networks. Disney's deal includes library titles too, like the older Spider-Man movies and Into the Spiderverse. So essentially Sony movies will either be on Netflix or Disney Plus depending on when.

Front Lines
Roku alleges Google is using its monopoly power in YouTube TV carriage negotiations
- Roku announced Monday that the YouTube TV app might stop working on Roku in the next few days because of Google's "anti-competitive and discriminatory terms."  Like many big video providers, Roku and Google have an agreement to give each other a few extra things that you wouldn't get just by submitting an app to Roku's App Store. That usually involves ad revenue sharing, extra promotion and placement in the apps store. Roku alluded to a dispute over consumer data sharing, new hardware spec requirements and Roku wants to lower the priority of a dedicated search result row for YouTube while limiting search results to just YouTube results when the YouTube app is open.

Apple announces new Apple TV 4K
- Apple announced a new Apple TV 4K with a faster A12 Bionic processor and support for HDR in high frame rate, including over Airplay. You can also now use a new iPhone to adjust the TVs color balance from the Apple TV, no need to mess with the TV's settings. And there's a new remote design with a touch-enabled circular clickpad, power button, mute button and Siri button on the side. The new Apple TV is $179 for the 32 Gigabyte version and $199 for the 64 Gigabyte version. If you just want the new remote you can buy that for $59. Orders start April 30, shipping in the later half of May.

You can buy Apple’s new $60 Siri remote a la carte for your old Apple TV, too

Netflix subscriber growth is stalling as it runs low on hits
- Netflix reported subscribers rose from 204 million last quarter to 208 million. Unsurprisingly, that's a much slower growth than last year in the first part of pandemic-related lockdowns. It's also less growth than Netflix had predicted for itself. Netflix attributed the slowdown to a "lighter content slate" in the first half of this year as a result of production shutdowns in 2020. Netflix did not identify the increased competition of more streaming services like HBO Max, Peacock and others as a factor. Netflix says a strong second half with the return of The Witcher and movies starring The Rock and Leonardo DiCaprio will accelerate growth.  Meanwhile Netflix predicts it will add 1 million subscribers next quarter.

During its earnings call Co-CEO reed Hastings said the company is testing ways to discourage password sharing but added, “We test many things but we would never roll something out that feels like turning the screws.”

HBO And HBO Max Add 2.7M Subscribers In Q1; AT&T CEO John Stankey Declines To Offer Revised Streaming Metrics
- During AT&T's earnings it announced that HBO Max added 2.7 million subscribers last quarter to reach a total of 44.2 million. Godzilla vs. Kong drew the largest viewing audience of all its content, but actual numbers weren't released.

Atmosphere TV Raises $25 Million To Stream Silent Ad-Supported Content In Bars And Dentist Offices Across America
- Austin's Atmosphere TV got a new round of funding for its business that provides audio-optional content supported by subscriptions and advertising. The service is marketed to bars and restaurants that want to show something designed to be seen and not necessarily hears. During lockdowns it has marketed itself to other waiting rooms look repair shops and medical offices and wants to get into airports, hotels and college campuses. Venues can insert their own ads into the stream.

Nielsen Launches Expanded Streaming Video Ratings Offering, Saying Streaming Is Now 25% Of TV Viewing
- Nielsen has launched Streaming Video ratings which expands the data it captures about what people watch on TV. The new product increases the number of streaming services it measures from four to ten as well as measuring which devices are used to stream.

Dispatches from the Front
The episode 357 should have been titled Briceless.
- Curt

Brian mentioned that the #1 reason he'd want to go back to see a movie in the theatre when it's safe is... "kids". And for me, as a non-parent, the #1 reason I did NOT go to the theatres much in the past was... "kids". Every movie is so much better without the random shouting, running around, kicking seats, laughing at the wrong times. Now I'm sure BRIAN'S kids aren't the ones making it a miserable experience to see most movies in the theatres, but now you add on that kids aren't getting vaccinated yet, and there's a non-zero chance that I can still get Covid even though I'm vaccinated, and you won't catch me in a theatre for a long time yet, and I literally live next door to one. I don't want to see them go under, but short of an Alamo Drafthouse moving near me, I don't know why I'd go back if I have another option (and perhaps an Alamo without the focus on beer, since what are drunk people? Just oversized kids ruining movies in the same ways!)

Hey killers!

Brian, I often take umbrage at your, ""I don't like it"" takes on anything popular. I've never taken umbrage at Andrew and Diana's. Today I realized why. They spend an hour plus explaining who, what, when, where, and why they liked or didn't like something. So I'd like to apologize for my misguided umbrage that I've never expressed. FYI the reason people get defensive when you don't like something they do it's often because they perceive your dislike as better informed (real or imagined). It's a perceived talking down, and no one likes that.

Love y'all, love the show!
