Apple Working on Combined TV Box, Speaker to Revive Home Efforts
Apple said to be developing Apple TV/HomePod combo and iPad-like smart speaker display
- Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has a good track record of finding out what Apple is up to before they announce it.
- Gurman's sources say Apple is working on a couple of new smart home devices.
- One of them is a HomePod speaker that includes Siri and the functions of an iPad. So a smart speaker with a screen. For Cordkillers that could provide an extra way to watch shows on a small screen in say a bathroom or kitchen. The screen might be mounted on a movable arm that could automatically follow your face during video calls or adult for better viewing.
- But the other device he says is coming is an AppleTV combined with a smart speaker. And that can go in your home theater. It would have all the normal Apple TV functions but also include a speaker that could be used even when the TV is off as well as a mic and camera. That means you can ask Siri to do things, presumably all the normal things you might ask Siri plus Apple TV-specific things. The camera would be useful for video calls on the TV.
- These products are in development which means they might never make it out of development.
- But we do know Apple discontinued its original HomePod recently and previous reports indicated a new Apple TV with a redesigned remote control was expected sometime this year.

‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ Rises To $358M Worldwide; ‘Mortal Kombat’ Kicks Off With $11M Overseas – International Box Office
‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ Set To Profit During Pandemic At Global Box Office: Here’s How
- We all thought Tenet might be the herald of the return of the theater crowd but in the end it seems like it was Godzilla vs. Kong.
- The monster movie hit $357.8 million worldwide this weekend. It is now the number one grossing movie since March 2020 in the US and close to passing Tenet to gain that distinction worldwide.
- Deadline did the math and estimates Godzilla vs. Kong will end up making $96.4 million in profit. That includes an estimated $45 million licensing fee paid by HBO Max to Warner Brothers. So if you leave HBO Max out of the equation entirely Godzilla vs. Kong is still going to make money.
- Side note: Mortal Kombat opened in 17 markets outside the US bringing in $10.7 million.

Hey Cordkillers,
I just wanted to make sure that you remember to ask Brian what he thinks of his TCL television.
https://youtu.be/IWoDToVcnHo?t=1275
For the record I have a TCL 4k television with built-in Roku although it is only about a year old. I have no complaints outside of HBO Max's laggy interface, but that app is just as terrible on my Roku Ultra.
I hope you get a deluge of these emails. Love the show!

I don't see the point in commercial free streaming services releasing ratings numbers. As a consumer I would prefer streaming services to add a health indicator for each show. Red means the show is going to be canceled, Yellow means it might be canceled and green for it's going to keep going. This way I know how much I'll have to proselytize the show to others.

Hey Gents,
My Mother-In-Law started asking some questions about cord cutting and I was like, "this is what I've been training for!" She started asking about which service would be best and I asked about what channels and shows she likes. Then, my mind went blank and I COULD NOT remember the sites I've heard you recommending for selecting a streaming service based on channel desires. I've done some searching and haven't had much luck finding that site and a few others I've found have not been very helpful.
Other than Tom's Brief Guide, is there a tl;dr listing of your current recommendations? =)
Thanks
- Jonathan
