Primary Target
Nielsen finds nostalgia fuels interest in classic TV comedies during pandemic
- Nielsen did an analysis of viewing habits during the pandemic. You could guess that viewing TV went up overall.
- Nielsen also found that while overall viewing of comedy on TV dropped 9% viewing of classic sitcoms as far back as the 1960s grew. We may not have found things as funny in 2020, but we were connoted by the old stuff.
- Friends certainly got all the attention and was the most watched comedy with 96.7 million minutes viewed on broadcast and cable alone, up 30% from 2019. Andy Griffith grew 29% and Roseanne jumped 70%.
- Some shows that had very little viewing in 2019 saw huge spikes. Family matters rose 302% to 11.4 billion minutes.
- I love Lucy, Good Times, Full House and Fresh Prince of Bel-air also jumped.
- And those are all broadcast and TV numbers. Streaming numbers have also risen for old shows, especially on free ad-supported platforms like Tubi, Pluto and IMDB.TV. The Sopranos rewatch earlier this year gained a lot of buzz and Nielsen listed The Office as the most streamed show int he US in 2020.
- This is all somewhat old news. But why?
- Allison has volunteered to share her perspective on why old TV shows have been gaining her viewing time.

Is rewatching old TV good for the soul?
- Allison's rewatches

Front Lines
AMC Theatres Will Start Selling Popcorn in Shopping Malls and Supermarkets
- In a move that to me feels like it took too long for them to realize, AMC Theaters will begin selling its popcorn to people outside of its theaters. In addition to popcorn, AMC will also sell candy and drinks. Plans are to start with kiosks and malls in the first half of next year in places without an AMC theater. You will also be able to get to-go items without seeing a movie at the theater. Then standalone retail stores will come along with 15 expected by the end of 2023. And eventually you'll be able to get popcorn and snacks delivered to your house. You know, where you watch movies.

Netflix's Maid came in second with 1.9 billion minutes. Black Widow was the top movie of the week with 676 million minutes. Overall streaming hours increased 21% and average revenue per user, which grows along with advertising and viewing rose to $40 per user per year.

HBO Max and Discovery+ might merge into a single platform
- At some point next year it's expected that Warner Media will officially leave AT&T and merge with Discovery Networks. And president and CEO of Discovery Streaming and International JB Perrette gave Gizmodo some insights on what that will mean for streaming. An HBO Max Discovery Plus bundle seems like a no-brainer and is in the plans but Perette said they're also thinking of merging the services to create a new platform. Perette said this would result in cost saving and consumer benefits. Less than half of Discovery Plus subscribers in the US are also subscribed to HBO Max.

Dispatches from the Front
One of my favorite ways to consume movies (especially big budget summer) is in virtual reality. I always loved the cinema dome in LA but in VR I can have an equivalent experience every night. Being able to watch a huge curved display while sitting on the moon was a fantastic experience to watch ""For All Mankind""

There are multiple applications that will allow you to watch movies with friends which was great during the COVID shutdown.  Whether it's a native app like prime video theater or a third party app like big screen.

I hope you explore this medium on your show because it's an amazing experience to share with you bosses.

Brian, Tom, Bryce and possible guest,

Last week when you talked about Dune part 1 you made it sound as if all multi-part movies were always finished. After all, if Hollywood was going to invest enough into the beginning of the movie series surely they would spend what was necessary to finish it.

However, I have two examples for you to consider.

#1 The Divergent series was literally one book away from being finished when Hollywood stopped that series after three movies.

#2 Narnia. In 2005 The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe was released. In 2008 Prince Caspian. In 2010 The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. And then... nothing!

Clearly Hollywood is willing to walk away from a series of movies if they think the odds are not in their favor.
