How to Watch
MLB in talks to launch nationwide streaming service for home games without cable TV
- The New York Post's sources say Major League Baseball is in talks to adjust it's streaming service to let fans watch ALL games, not just games that are not otherwise broadcast in their markets.Z
- Right now Major League Baseball offers a service in the US called MLB.TV that lets you access any game not available in your home market on a regional sports network.
- The idea stems from the version of the service offered over cable. Since you had cable with the local sports net, the local channel wanted you to watch it to make sure they got credit for the viewing so they could charge for their ads. When MLB started offering an internet-version the idea remained. RSNs would not easily be able to charge advertisers for ads shown online so they required MLB to make them the only option.
- That's understandable unless of course you live in an area deemed to be the local market but your local cable service doesn't offer the channel. The most famous example of this was in Los Angeles where Time Warner was the only service carrying the network which showed Dodgers games, leaving people in Charter and Comcast areas without a legal option. That eased when Charter and Time Warner merged.
- The New York Posts says the NHL and NBA are considering partnering with MLB on the service. The idea would be to pay the RSNs, who create the broadcasts a cut of the revenue from he new service, in order to make up for any lost revenue from ads and carriage fees. MLB would make its money on internet-only ads and a $10_$20 a month subscription fee.
- The major player MLB will have to convince is Sinclair which owns broadcast rights for 14 MLB teams, 16 NBA teams, and 12 NHL teams. Sinclair wants to start its own streaming service independent of cable but has struggled to finance it. A partnership with MLB and other leagues may be its way forward. One proposal being considered is for MLB to just the fees Sinclair pays to carry the team by $1 billion a year in order to get the rights to stream.

The documents also showed that 132 million people watched Squid Game in the first 23 days, beating Bridgerton to become Netflix's most popular series ever. 89 percent of people who started Squid Game watched at least 75 minutes, or more than one episode, and 87 million people finished it in the first 23 days (66 percent). That was a delayed reaction too, because Nielsen released its treamign numbers for the week of September 13, Squid Games first week on Netflix and it didn't crack the top 10.
