Dispatches from the Front
Hey guys,
Just my input on the proposed ""shuffle button"" option. A few years ago, Hulu had a series of ""best of"" playlists on their show pages that I enjoyed - specifically in Star Trek Voyager, I remember a ""best of Seven of Nine"" playlist that satisfied that feeling of ""I want to watch Star Trek but I don't wanna choose which episode."" I thought that would be a great addition - especially with series like Trek where we finally have new content coming out -- a option that would curate past content that might serve to provide context. Just a thought,
- Davey
Hi there, Cordkillers Crew! (and possible guest)
So, because of COVID, a lot of places were closed and right now are reopening. While there is a discussion between what model will be the future for the industry (Disney and premium streaming vs Warner delaying films but releasing them on theaters), what are the people who actually show the movies doing?
Here in Mexico, there was an interesting new option offered by Cinemex, which is the second biggest exhibitor here, so, here I go with some points to try and make myself understood.
1- Cinemas are open in most of the country, but they are allowed to be at 30% capacity as a precaution measurement against the current pandemic.
2- Cinemex and Cinepolis (the two main exhibitors) have different kind of rooms within their complexes. One of those kinds is the VIP room. The one where you can order nice meals, wine and have seats that are more comfortable than the ones you have at home.
3- Cinemex is right now offering the opportunity to rent one of these rooms very cheap. How cheap, you ask? Well, you can rent an entire room for you and your group of máximum 10 people for just 1,100 pesos (about 51 bucks) from Monday to Thursday or 1,400 pesos (66 green bills) from Friday to Sunday (link with info here,). You can also rent the room for a group of just 5 people at a cheaper cost (32 bucks on weekdays and 40 on the weekend).
4- Yes, they probably are losing money by doing this, but considering how many seats they can offer, if a family wants to watch a movie and not having the risk of meeting more people and risking a possible infection, this seems like a nice option. Here is a map of how the seats are distributed on a VIP room.
5- By taking into account that you have to keep safety measurements in the entire complex, this seemed to me like an innovative way of approaching the customer, assuring him limited contact with other groups, and begin a recovery path for a business that was really affected by the current pandemic. The offering of films and times are limited. You have to check what movie is being shown at what time, and then select the option to rent that showing for your group. Still, seems like a nice offering.
So, with this option, would you guys give a second thought to catch a movie at the cinema? 30 bucks for having a premium rent of Mulan is cheaper, but with 32 dollars you can actually watch the movie with your family or friends at the cinema.
Hope this info is of your interest! Keep doing amazing work, guys! Stay safe and saludos desde México.

Hey Guys,
I've had a Roku 3 for years and always been super happy with it and recommended Roku to everyone in streaming conversations because of its neutral stance on channels.
However, the HBO Max and Peacock fights are knocking the shine off of my one time favorite, especially since I am supposed to get HBO Max as a perk of my ATT fiber package.
What is the next best "whatever device I want" that will let me stream what I want, when I want? Simpler interface is better as any device must pass the Mrs approval.
Thanks
- Ross
