Primary Target
Are you binge-watching too much? How to know if your TV habits are a problem – and what to do about it
- Binge watch entered the mainstream around 2013 when the OED considered it for word of the year. (It picked Selfie instead).
- Now binge watching has become a normal thing. Whether it's on a. Show's first release when all the episodes are out like on Netflix, or later after they've all been released week-to-week like on HBO Max, People can watch a lot of one series at once.
- But do you?
- There are different flavors of binge watching. There's watching all 12 episodes of a season in one night and then there's watching two episodes a night over a week.
- Some people binge watch only on special occasions, like long holiday weekends. Some people binge watch only when the show is really good.
- And for others it's their default mode.
- The Conversation even has an article looking at whether Binge watching can become an addictive behavior and found, like other compulsive behaviors, problematic binge watching is associated with depression and anxiety.
- For most people it's likely not problematic or perhaps even a thing.
- I've noticed my binge watching decline over the years, whether that's age or just the wearing off of novelty.
- What's your binge watching pattern?

How to Watch
Why Red Notice was able to beat Bird Box as Netflix’s biggest movie debut ever
- Red Notice, a big dumb action flick with big stars has surpassed Bird Box a smart clever arguably more substantive film also with a big star. This is in hours watched too so it means people are well, watching it. A lot. Red Notice has 328 million hours viewed to Bird Box's 282 million.
- This has many people scratching their heads to bemoaning the fate of humanity.
- The median is probably just puzzling.
- The Verge's Catie Keck dug into why. Especially considering it had competition from a new Ghostbusters movie and an 8-hour Beatles documentary.
- The most compelling argument is that more people have Netflix now than they did when Bird Box was new. 139 million then to 214 million now.
- Does that explain it? Is it just that Netflix has a bigger pool to draw from?

What to Watch
‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ Drops First-Look Trailer
- There's a trailer out for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse, the sequel to the animated Into the Spider-verse. And it now carries a "Part One" on the title. WELL THEY BETTER MAKE PART TWO! Right Dune fans?!?!
- Anyway, The trailer is mostly what appears to be the opening scene as it picks up from the end of the last movie with Miles Morales in his room at his Aunt's house when Spider-Gwen drops back in from the multiverse. How are we feeling about the voice of Kate Bishop in Hawkeye being Spider-Gwen? Cool?
- Anyway there's also a tease at some varying animation styles and what looks like the Spider-Man 2099 voiced by Oscar Isaac though we don't hear the voice.
- Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse arrives October 7, 2022.

‘The Matrix Resurrections’: 5 Big Burning Questions From the New Trailer
- The new trailer for The Matrix:'' Resurrections shows split screen comparisons of the first movie with the new one along with Carrie-Anne Moss's VoiceOver from he original talking about deja vu meaning they've changed something in the Matrix. One intriguing bit is pairing Agent Smith with the Original with Yahoo Abdul-Mateen II Morpheus in the new one. And the new Agent Smith, Jonathan Goff is matched with Neo, when both of them have their mouths sealed shut. There's also a very unkempt Merovingian. And there's a scene of what appears to be the machines fighting other machines. And new Trinity puts on the sunglasses along with Neo from the original.

Marvel confirms Charlie Cox will return as Daredevil (if he joins the MCU)
- During press for Spider-Man: No Way Home (the Tom Holland one) Kevin Feige said that if Daredevil were to appear in any future movies it would be played by Charlie Cox, who played Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil in the Netflix series. Feige said "Where we see that, how we see that, when we see that, remains to be seen."

Netflix Announces ‘Death to 2021,’ Releases Teaser
- Remember Netflix's One-off "Death to 2020" show that was just a funny riff on how awful 2020 was? Well, there's a teaser for "Death to 2021" coming December 27th. It will star Hugh Grant, Lucy Liu, Tracey Ullman, Samson Kayo, Joe Keery, William Jackson Harper, Stockard Channing, Cristin Milioti, Diane Morgan, Nick Mohammed and more.

Netflix is turning viral Thanksgiving Mom tweet into a movie
- And proving it means it when it says it wants to have the widest variety of programming available, Netflix is turning a viral tweet into a series.
- If you're unfamiliar, in 2016, the ThanksGiving Tweet was a real thing where someone's Grandma accidentally texted a Thanksgiving invitation to the wrong person and then she invited him anyway and he showed up. The grandma, Wanda Dench, still has Jamal Hinton over for Thanksgiving every year. The show will be written by Abdul Williams (The New Edition Story, The Bobby Brown Story) but no cast or director are on it yet.

Dispatches from the Front
Tom, Brian and Bryce,

First, Boba Fett wanting to take over for Jabba fits in my opinion. I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan, but never got into the Legends books. So I know who Salacious Crumb is but I'd be hard pressed to name Leia and Han's 3 kids. This is what I know about Boba:

He was traumatized at a young age when he watched Mace Windu behead his father. As an orphan during Star Wars Clone Wars his character flip flopped a lot. Sometimes he was an angry kid looking for revenge. Sometimes he was trying to get rich with some bounty hunters. To me it also felt like he was a kid looking for a home. By the time we get to Empire and Return of the Jedi it seems like he has found his home. He delivered Han, why stick around with Jabba? I just kinda assumed he finally found his home. With that said I think it's fitting that he would want to take over once Jabba is gone. Why it took so long I have no idea, but I'm interested in watching.

Second, my question for Biran, Does he really not know what show is first on spoilering time? At first I thought it was part of the script for him to ask what was first. But sometimes it feels like he really doesn't know. If this is an act then, you're a much better actor than I would have thought. Start doing VO work =P

Hi Tom/Brian/Bryce/Guest - I thought I would give you my complete unsolicited review of some of the streaming boxes that I own and use(or don’t use).
Fire TV Box/Stick: I sold my last one a couple of years ago due to how horrendous the interface was. Pretty much like the Prime Video App where it is a chore to figure out how to do what you want to do among all the ads and all the unnecessary fluff. I admin I haven’t used it in a couple of years but from Video reviews on YouTube it doesn't look like the interface has changed.

NVIDIA Shield TV Box: This is solid hardware that is brought down by really bad slow and buggy software. The moment you try to scroll too fast or do something a little intensive the Android TV interface freezes. I still use it as my Plex server but haven’t actually used it as a streaming box because of the bad Android TV software.

Roku TV/Ultra Box - This is in Tom’s rating scale just fine. They get the job done, don't do anything fancy, have all the apps in the world. But a couple of major setbacks are.

1. You lose progress when you move out of an App. You can technically have only one App open and when you move to another App and come back it is like you are opening the App fresh.
2. The Roku TV Remote is IR LOS based. In 2021 this is absolutely ridiculous as this makes it so hard to use in the living room when there are folks around you actually have to ask them to move so you can pause the TV. What is this the 1980s?

LG WebOS: This is on my LG OLED and is again perfectly serviceable but nothing special and I would say you can use this without having to buy a separate box. It’s pretty snappy and the magic remote does get annoying at times but you get used to it.

Google TV With Chromecast: The one I had the most hope for but the one that let me down the most. My major issues with it are again going back to Android TV which is still not as smooth as it should be in 2021. Also only 1 adult profile still. Doesn’t aggregate all the in progress shows from all the apps and even when it does it’s rarely upto date. I need to open the app once and then it syncs. It doesn’t do it in the background which is weird. Oh and it’s got only 4GB of space and Cache is included in that and I had to actually delete apps because it couldn’t stream.

Xbox Series X/PS5 - These are again pretty serviceable but nothing out of this world. I don’t think the app developers spend a lot of time on these Apps and these may be very rarely used. I see updates once in 2-3 months for the apps on these platforms. I even have the Media remotes for both these devices and while it improves the experience doesn’t make it a winner. Also not all apps are in both the systems.

And finally my Recommendation: The Apple TV: This is probably the priciest streaming box (except for the gaming ones and nVIDIA Shield) and you get what you pay for. Apps are clean and uniform. Very few bugs in the system. Multitasking where you can actually have multiple apps open and can switch between them. Yes some Apps (I am looking at you Peacock done’t use Apple’s standard Video Player but all of them use the scrubber and the forward and back on the remote. Siri can search across Apps as Well.

If someone asks me today I would say folks should go for the Apple TV and then Roku else use their inbuilt TV’s Apps the others I wouldn’t recommend.

This email ended up being longer than I expected so if I am lucky enough to be selected I am sure it will be paraphrased. 😂

Thanks,

- Josh
